Oahu Native Daryl Arata: The Statistical Backbone of the Golden State Warriors
Arata’s journey began with his first job out of school at the Chicago Bulls, where he witnessed history unfold, including Steve Kerr’s game-winning shot in the 1997 finals. This pivotal experience fueled his passion for sports statistics. After graduating from McKinley High School, he worked with the Kaleo newspaper and the school’s sports information department before moving on to the Sacramento Kings and eventually joining the Warriors in 2016 as their director of publications and statistical information.
“It’s all about timing,” Arata reflects, acknowledging the network of individuals who helped him along the way. He emphasizes the importance of his education at the University of Hawaii, where he honed his skills in sports information.
Every game, Arata presents meticulously prepared notes that highlight seasonal statistics and trends, catering to both casual fans and national media. He focuses on extraordinary stats, especially those involving Curry, who consistently sets new records. “I’m lucky enough where, obviously, we have Steph Curry, so he does a lot of the records and stuff, so I don’t have to worry too much about finding things,” he said.
Returning to Hawaii for the Warriors’ training camp is always a special occasion for Arata. It allows him to reconnect with colleagues and friends he hasn’t seen in a while. “Hawaii will always be home,” he stated, expressing his deep affection for his roots.
In conclusion, Daryl Arata’s contributions to the Golden State Warriors exemplify the vital role that statistics play in professional sports. As the team gears up for another season, Arata remains a crucial behind-the-scenes figure, ensuring that every statistic tells a story and every game is backed by data-driven insights.
